In building Project Acorn, the Community of Innovation for the
Greater Philadelphia region, New Economy Strategies identified leading
innovators under the following categories:
- Regional Expertise - top producers
and innovators: scientists, entrepreneurs and developers
- Regional Science Activities
- top regional research strengths and priorities
- Regional Commercialization
Strengths - top assets and programs that stimulate and support commercialization
- Regional Infrastructure - vital
infrastructure that supports innovation: wet labs, specialized facilities,
equipment, logistics, and training and skill development facilities
Regional Expertise and Regional Science Activity were captured through
aggregating and analyzing patent and funding data from numerous sources.
We focused on the following industry groups in the 11 counties comprising
Greater Philadelphia:
- Genomics
- Proteomics
- Sequencing
- Genotyping
- RNA expression profiling
- Protein expression
- Bioinformatics
- Biomarker based research
- Therapeutics
We screened 5000 individuals and interviewed the innovation leaders (Acorns)
to catalog the regional expertise and scientific activities occurring
in the Greater Philadelphia region. The result is nearly a database containing
detailed profiles and geographical mapping of more than 150 Acorns who
are driving innovation in their communities.
