In building Project Acorn, the Community of Innovation for the Greater Philadelphia region, New Economy Strategies identified leading innovators under the following categories:

  • Regional Expertise - top producers and innovators: scientists, entrepreneurs and developers
  • Regional Science Activities - top regional research strengths and priorities
  • Regional Commercialization Strengths - top assets and programs that stimulate and support commercialization
  • Regional Infrastructure - vital infrastructure that supports innovation: wet labs, specialized facilities, equipment, logistics, and training and skill development facilities

Regional Expertise and Regional Science Activity were captured through aggregating and analyzing patent and funding data from numerous sources. We focused on the following industry groups in the 11 counties comprising Greater Philadelphia:

  • Genomics
  • Proteomics
  • Sequencing
  • Genotyping
  • RNA expression profiling
  • Protein expression
  • Bioinformatics
  • Biomarker based research
  • Therapeutics

We screened 5000 individuals and interviewed the innovation leaders (Acorns) to catalog the regional expertise and scientific activities occurring in the Greater Philadelphia region. The result is nearly a database containing detailed profiles and geographical mapping of more than 150 Acorns who are driving innovation in their communities.
